Australia Introduces the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa
On 7 December 2024, Australia introduced a significant update to its migration program by launching the Skills in Demand (SID) visa, replacing the previously well-known Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa. This new visa aims to streamline pathways for skilled workers while offering opportunities for long-term career growth in Australia.
At Sirus Migration Education, we’ve summarised the key points of this new visa to help you understand the benefits, eligibility requirements, and steps to get started.
What is the SID Visa?
The Skills in Demand (SID) visa is designed to address Australia’s ongoing labour shortages by attracting skilled workers globally.
For TSS Applicants in Process
If your employer submitted a TSS nomination before 7 December but you have not yet lodged your visa application, don’t worry—the nomination will automatically transfer to a SID nomination.
Key Benefits of the SID Visa
Here’s what the new SID visa has to offer:
- Work duration: Stay in Australia for up to 4 years (or 5 years for Hong Kong passport holders).
- Study opportunities: You can study in Australia but without government assistance.
- Freedom to travel: Enjoy unrestricted travel in and out of Australia during your visa period.
- Pathways to Permanent Residency: If eligible, the SID visa offers opportunities for permanent residency in Australia.
Streams Under the SID Visa
- Specialist Skills Pathway
- Designed for occupations with annual salaries of AUD 135,000 or higher.
- No occupation list is applicable for this pathway.
- Core Skills Pathway
- Similar to the previous TSS visa, this stream caters to occupations listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
- Essential Skills Pathway
- Includes Designated Area Migration Agreements (DAMA) to address specific regional workforce needs.
Eligibility Criteria for the SID Visa
To qualify for the SID visa, applicants must:
✅ Be sponsored for an eligible occupation.
✅ Have relevant work experience, skills, and a positive skills assessment (if required).
✅ Meet health, character, and English proficiency requirements.
Cost of the SID Visa
The application fee for the main applicant is AUD 3,115.
Additional costs may apply for:
- Dependants included in the application
- Health checks
- Other visa requirements
Family Inclusion
Eligible family members can be included in your SID visa application. However, they must meet Australia’s health and character requirements.
Important Points to Remember
- Visa Conditions: Ensure you comply with all conditions of the SID visa.
- New Applications: If your visa is expiring, you’ll need a new employer nomination and fresh application.
- Processing Time: Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Submitting complete documentation upfront will help avoid unnecessary delays.
Your Obligations Under the SID Visa
- Start work within 90 days of visa approval or entry into Australia.
- Work only in your nominated occupation for your sponsoring employer.
